The initial accident took place around 5 a.m., prompting the response of the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office. The collision occurred in the eastbound lanes of I-129 and involved a 2008 Toyota Camry, which had been reported stolen from South Sioux City, Nebraska.

According to the sheriff’s office, the stolen Camry was traveling eastbound on I-129 when it collided with the center median barricade, leading to a devastating crash.

Witnessing the aftermath of the collision, two compassionate individuals stopped their vehicles to offer assistance to the driver of the stolen Camry. Tragically, while rendering aid, a second vehicle traveling in the same direction collided with the crashed Camry and the two good Samaritans. The second vehicle continued its course and struck a third car parked on the shoulder of the interstate.

Regrettably, one of the heroic good Samaritans, identified as a 66-year-old resident of South Sioux City, lost their life as a result of the crash, while the other sustained injuries. Both the surviving good Samaritan and the driver of the second vehicle were immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment.

In a shocking turn of events, the driver of the stolen Camry fled the scene, leaving authorities in search of the individual. At this time, the sheriff’s office has been unable to provide a physical description of the driver, only confirming their gender as male.

Shortly after the eastbound crash, a separate collision occurred in the westbound lanes of I-129. Fortunately, this incident did not result in any serious injuries.

The occurrence of both crashes on I-129, between the Dakota Avenue exit and the Missouri River, necessitated temporary closures of both eastbound and westbound lanes.

Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the driver of the stolen vehicle to come forward and contact the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, assisting in their investigation.
