Accident – Death – Obituary News : Tragic Fiery Crash in New York Claims Lives of Five Connecticut Children and Teens in Devastating Accident

After a thorough investigation, officials have determined that a fatal crash in New York that resulted in the deaths of five children and teenagers from Connecticut was an accident caused by the 16-year-old driver falling asleep at the wheel. The Westchester County Police Department announced on Tuesday that no charges will be filed in connection with the March 19 crash that occurred on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Scarsdale, New York. The incident involved a 2021 Nissan Rogue driven by 16-year-old Malik Smith, with five other passengers aged between 8 and 17.

According to reports, the vehicle failed to negotiate a curve in the highway, veering off the road before colliding with a boulder and a tree. Tragically, the impact caused the car to burst into flames, resulting in the death of all family members on board, except for a 9-year-old who managed to escape through a shattered rear window. The surviving child sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The Westchester County Police Department conducted a meticulous examination of the accident scene and the vehicle involved. Their findings confirmed that there was no evidence of a collision that forced the car off the road. Furthermore, investigators determined that the driver did not engage the brakes or take any evasive action after the vehicle left the roadway. Based on these factors, the police concluded that the most probable cause of the accident was the driver falling asleep at the wheel.

Toxicology reports confirmed that neither drugs nor alcohol played a role in the crash. As a result, the investigation into the accident has been closed by the police. It was previously disclosed that Smith was operating the vehicle without a driver’s license or permit, and the car had been rented by a family member. Authorities believe that the group of youths were traveling from New Jersey to their new home in Derby, Connecticut.

Responding to inquiries regarding family-related matters, the Westchester County Police Department advised redirecting those questions to Connecticut officials. They emphasized that their focus was solely on the accident investigation and determining the cause of the tragic crash.
