A Sega Nomad, a handheld gaming console from the 90s, recently made its way into a repair shop with a myriad of issues. The owner, Leon Kiriliuk, shared the details of the console’s troubles on Twitter, along with a picture of the damaged device.

One of the problems encountered was a leaked CE202 capacitor, which caused a control trace from IC201 to TR201 to break. This issue alone would have been enough to render the console inoperable, but there were more obstacles to overcome.
TR201, a vital component for the Sega Nomad’s functionality, was also found to be dead. Thankfully, Leon was able to find a replacement from Alteracious, a company known for their excellent replacement parts. After swapping out the faulty TR201, the console was one step closer to being fully functional once again.
Additionally, the IC201 chip needed to be replaced. This chip is responsible for processing and controlling the console’s functions, so it was crucial to find a suitable replacement to ensure the console’s proper operation.
Lastly, the Sega Nomad’s DC power plug had broken solder joints, causing power issues. This was likely a result of wear and tear over the years. Fortunately, this problem was relatively easy to fix by re-soldering the connections, ensuring a secure power supply to the console.
Leon Kiriliuk’s dedication to restoring this Sega Nomad is commendable. With his determination and the necessary repairs, this handheld console will have a new lease on life, ready to bring joy to gaming enthusiasts once again.
