Fatal Stabbing Incident Shakes Philadelphia’s Macy’s Store

A 30-year-old man has been charged with murder and a range of other offenses by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office following a tragic stabbing incident that took place at the Macy’s department store in Center City on Monday. The suspect, identified as Tyrone Garcell Tunnell, was initially apprehended by store security after attempting to steal multiple hats, as reported by Action News 6 Philadelphia.

Released and Returned to Commit Murder

After returning the stolen items, Tunnell was released by Macy’s security. However, a mere 15 minutes later, he re-entered the store and fatally stabbed a security guard identified as 27-year-old Eric Harrison. Another guard, 23-year-old Christian Mitchell, courageously intervened during the attack and sustained injuries to his face and arm.

Swift Apprehension and Criminal History

Tunnell was later apprehended at the Somerset SEPTA station in the Kensington section of the city. Witnesses were able to positively identify him as the perpetrator. The charges brought against Tunnell include murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, possession of an instrument of crime, tampering with evidence, and retail theft. Court documents reveal Tunnell’s extensive criminal history, with over a dozen arrests for various offenses such as retail theft, robbery, and drug-related charges across Philadelphia, Bucks, Delaware, and Montgomery counties.

Interim Police Commissioner John Stanford reported that the store has recorded over 250 theft reports this year alone.
