Gunman Who killed 4, Including 1-Year-Old Boy, Dies by Suicide After Police Chase

The search for the suspect responsible for a quadruple killing, which tragically claimed the life of a 1-year-old boy, came to a dramatic end as the perpetrator led police on a high-speed freeway chase in Dallas, Texas. The chase concluded with the suspect crashing into a ditch and dying by apparent suicide, according to authorities.

The horrific incident unfolded in a southeast Dallas neighborhood on Sunday afternoon. Despite the tragedy, the Dallas Police Department reassured the public that the incident appeared to be isolated, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The suspect in the shooting has been identified as 21-year-old Byron Carillo, as confirmed by the police statement. Family members of the victims revealed that Carillo was the ex-boyfriend of 20-year-old Vanessa De La Cruz, one of the deceased. He was also the father of Logan De La Cruz, the 1-year-old boy who tragically lost his life in the attack.

According to the family, Vanessa De La Cruz ended her relationship with Carillo due to allegations of abuse. The shooting took place at the residence of De La Cruz’s parents.

Police revealed that Carillo had been ordered to wear an ankle monitoring device after being charged with aggravated assault in 2021. However, it remains unclear whether Vanessa De La Cruz was the victim in the 2021 case.

On Monday, Carillo was spotted driving a stolen vehicle on Interstate 35 in Austin, over 200 miles away from Dallas. Attempting to evade highway patrol officers, Carillo engaged in a high-speed chase. The pursuit ended when the suspect veered off the freeway, crashing into a ditch. Carillo then attempted to flee on foot but ultimately shot himself in the head when officers approached, resulting in his death at the scene, as confirmed by the police.

The incident in southeast Dallas marks the 627th mass shooting in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. The organization defines a mass shooting as an event with a minimum of four victims shot, either injured or killed, not including the shooter.

Tragically, 1-year-old Logan De La Cruz became the 272nd child aged 11 or younger to lose their life in a shooting this year, as reported by the Gun Violence Archive.

Upon arriving at the crime scene, responding officers discovered three adults deceased inside the house, all with gunshot wounds. Additionally, two children were found injured, including Logan and a 15-year-old girl. While Logan succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, the teenage girl was treated and subsequently released. Another 13-year-old girl was found unharmed within the residence.

The victims other than Logan De La Cruz have been identified as 33-year-old Karina Lopez and 50-year-old Jose Lopez, as confirmed by the medical examiner’s office.

The motive behind the slayings remains under investigation, as authorities continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.

Dallas has seen an alarming 11% increase in homicides this year compared to 2022, according to crime data from the Dallas Police Department. The city has recorded 226 homicides as of Sunday in 2023.
