Accident – death – Obituary News : ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. (WLS) — The Elk Grove Village community is in shock as the family of a man killed by the police on Friday claims that he was having a diabetic episode and had called 911 himself for help. The incident occurred in the 200-block of Fern, where police were initially called to respond to reports of an armed man.

According to authorities, at approximately 4:30 p.m., officers arrived at the scene and encountered a man who exited the residence with a knife in hand. A confrontation between the man and the police unfolded in a nearby yard, ultimately resulting in the officers opening fire. The man, identified as 24-year-old Jack Murray from Chicago, was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival, as confirmed by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Murray’s family, devastated by the loss, asserts that he was suffering from a diabetic episode at the time and was desperately in need of assistance. “He was challenged by health issues, being type one. It impacted him physically and was an emotional challenge,” shared Murray’s aunt, Liz Belcaster.

The family’s attorney, Antonio Romanucci, expressed his belief that Murray recognized his need for help and had placed the 911 call himself. The family claims that this was not the first time Murray had sought assistance through emergency services, and they argue that the police should have been aware of their prior interactions with him at the residence.

Romanucci emphasized the importance of providing necessary support to individuals struggling with emotional disturbances. “It is of utmost importance to get emotionally disturbed individuals the assistance they need,” he stated.

As Murray’s mother grieved silently in the background, the family’s attorney demanded answers from the police, including the release of the 911 call recordings, any available body or dashcam footage, and an explanation of the events leading up to the fatal shooting. Romanucci contended that Murray posed no threat to the officers and that de-escalation tactics should have been employed instead of resorting to gunfire.
