Funeral Procession for Cortez Police Officer Sgt. Michael Moran Planned for Wednesday

Accident – death – Obituary News : The Cortez community is set to pay its final respects to fallen police officer Sgt. Michael Moran, who tragically lost his life during a routine traffic stop last week. As a mark of honor and remembrance, a memorial and funeral procession will be held in the town that Moran served with dedication and commitment.

The funeral service for Sgt. Michael Moran will take place on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Cortez Recreation Center. Although the funeral is not open to the public, the community is encouraged to line Main Street between Chestnut Street and Harrison Street to show their support and pay their respects. The procession is scheduled to commence at approximately 8:20 a.m.

In a touching tribute, a Cortez police patrol vehicle has been parked in front of the Cortez Police Department at 608 N. Park St. This vehicle now serves as a memorial to Sgt. Moran, and members of the public are invited to leave caring notes, flowers, and balloons for Moran’s grieving family.

Sgt. Michael Moran’s commitment to public service was evident throughout his life. Prior to joining the Cortez Police Department in 2012, Moran served in the Marine Corps for nine years, completing two tours of duty in Iraq. His dedication and sense of humor will be remembered by his fellow officers, friends, and family. Sgt. Moran leaves behind two daughters, who will undoubtedly cherish the memories of their loving father.

The incident that led to Sgt. Moran’s untimely death occurred on November 29th at around 11:25 a.m. In response to a complaint of reckless driving, Moran initiated a traffic stop on South Broadway. Tragically, during the stop, Moran was shot by one of the two individuals inside the suspect vehicle. The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Jason Campbell from Ogden, Utah, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The loss of Sgt. Michael Moran serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that law enforcement officers face daily while protecting and serving their communities. The Cortez community has rallied together in the wake of this tragedy, offering their support and condolences to Sgt. Moran’s family and the Cortez Police Department.
