The mystery surrounding the discovery of human remains in rural Indiana in 1982 has finally been solved. Authorities have confirmed that the remains belong to Connie Lorraine Christensen, a young woman from the Madison, Wisconsin-area community of Oregon who went missing over four decades ago. Lauren Ogden, the chief deputy coroner of the Wayne County Coroner’s Office, made the announcement after extensive DNA testing and forensic analysis.
The remains were initially found by hunters in December 1982 near Jacksonburg, a remote community located approximately 60 miles east of Indianapolis. At the time, the identity of the deceased was unknown, and the case remained unsolved. However, with advancements in forensic technology, investigators were able to extract DNA from the remains, which led them to Christensen’s relatives.
Christensen was last seen in April 1982 in Nashville, Tennessee, when she was believed to be three to four months pregnant. She had left her 1-year-old daughter with relatives while she traveled, but she never returned as planned to Wisconsin. Concerned for her well-being, her family reported her missing, and the investigation into her disappearance began.
The identification of Christensen’s remains was made possible through the collaboration between the Wayne County Coroner’s Office and the DNA Doe Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to solving cold cases. Using forensic genetic genealogy, the DNA Doe Project compared the extracted DNA with the DNA of Christensen’s relatives, ultimately leading to a positive match.
Interestingly, during the same period when the identification efforts were underway, Christensen’s family was also working on constructing an accurate family tree using ancestry and genealogy resources. This coincidence proved to be a significant factor in expediting the identification process, as several of Christensen’s living relatives had uploaded their DNA to an ancestry website. This information greatly assisted the genealogists at the DNA Doe Project, enabling them to provide the coroner’s office with a potential candidate much quicker than anticipated.
Upon confirming the identity of the remains, Ogden arranged for Christensen’s now-adult daughter to visit the location where her mother’s remains were discovered. In a poignant moment, she was able to leave flowers at the site, paying homage to her long-lost mother. Additionally, authorities presented her with a gold ring adorned with an opal and two diamonds, which had been found alongside the remains.
Missy Koski, a member of the DNA Doe Project, expressed her pride in the collaborative effort and the successful restoration of “Connie Christensen’s name after all this time.” The identification of Christensen’s remains brings closure to her family, who have spent decades wondering about her fate and longing for answers.
As this cold case is now solved, law enforcement agencies will continue their efforts to identify the person or persons responsible for Christensen’s death. The investigation into her homicide remains ongoing, and authorities are hopeful that new leads may emerge now that her identity has been established.
