Accident – death – Obituary News : Man Accused of Killing Four People Charged with Murder
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has formally charged Jerrid Powell, 33, with four counts of murder, one count of residential robbery, and one count of being a felon with a firearm. Powell is accused of killing three unhoused men in Los Angeles and another victim in San Dimas, California, over a four-day span last week. LA District Attorney George Gascón announced the charges on Monday.

In addition to the murder charges, Powell also faces special circumstances of allegedly committing multiple murders and murder in the course of a robbery. The DA’s office also suspects personal use of a firearm. Powell appeared before a judge on Monday afternoon, where he waived his right to a speedy trial. As a result, his formal arraignment and plea have been scheduled for January 8.
The series of killings, which took place between November 26 and November 29, shocked the Los Angeles community. Powell allegedly targeted unhoused individuals, shooting three men who were either sleeping on the street or in an alleyway. The victims, aged 37, 62, and 52, have not been named by the police.
On November 28, Powell allegedly followed Nicholas Simbolon into his garage, where he robbed him of his belongings before fatally shooting him. Simbolon, a 42-year-old father of two, worked as a project manager in the I.T. department of the Los Angeles County Chief Executive Office.
Powell was arrested on the evening of November 29 following a routine traffic stop in Beverly Hills. He was subsequently booked by the police. The investigation leading to his arrest involved the use of an automatic license plate reader system for a 2024 gray BMW, which alerted authorities to Powell’s whereabouts. Surveillance footage from Simbolon’s murder also played a crucial role in identifying the suspect. However, the use of this technology by the police has raised concerns among civil rights groups regarding privacy issues.

LA District Attorney Gascón praised the swift actions of law enforcement, stating that they undoubtedly saved lives. As the investigation continues, authorities are still searching for a motive behind Powell’s alleged spree of violence.
If convicted, Powell could face a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole.
