Tragic Accident Claims Life of Elderly Man in Iowa County
Blanchardville, Iowa County – A devastating collision on State Highway 78 has left a 69-year-old man dead and another driver facing serious charges, according to a report by the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office.
The tragic incident occurred when a Toyota Sienna, driven by a Blanchardville resident, was heading southbound on State Highway 78, near Blanchardville. Suddenly, a Ford F-150 traveling in the opposite direction veered into the wrong lane, resulting in a head-on collision with the minivan.
The Iowa County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim as Gary Gruenenfelder. Following the crash, Gruenenfelder was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries soon after.
The driver of the pickup truck, Thomas Naughtin, a 54-year-old resident of Blanchardville, was also taken to the hospital. Fortunately, Naughtin’s condition is reported to be stable, as confirmed by the Sheriff’s Office. However, his involvement in the incident has led to serious legal consequences.
Authorities have charged Naughtin with multiple offenses, including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, operating left of center causing death, and inattentive driving. Shockingly, it has been revealed that Naughtin has previously been convicted of five OWI (Operating While Intoxicated) offenses.
The tragic accident prompted the closure of State Highway 78 for nearly four hours as law enforcement officials conducted a thorough investigation and cleared the scene. This closure caused significant disruptions to traffic flow in the area.
