Woman Charged with First-Degree Murder and Child Abuse Resulting in Death of 3-Year-Old Son in Bel Air

BEL AIR, Md. – Authorities have announced that a 37-year-old woman from Morganton, North Carolina, has been charged in the tragic death of her 3-year-old son. The incident unfolded early Sunday morning when an off-duty Harford County Sheriff’s Deputy discovered the woman standing in the middle of the street, cradling the lifeless body of her child.

The off-duty deputy immediately contacted the police, who swiftly responded to the scene on N. Main Street in Bel Air. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers initiated life-saving measures on the toddler, later identified as 3-year-old Jason Garcia. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) crews transported the young boy to the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, but tragically, he was pronounced dead at approximately 6 a.m.

The mother, Gloria Elena Hughes, a resident of the 300 block of Golf Course Road in Morganton, is now facing charges of first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death in connection with this heartbreaking incident. She is currently being held at the Harford County Detention Center.

Officials have revealed that crucial video evidence played a significant role in the investigation, aiding authorities in piecing together the events leading up to the child’s death.
