Maj Kevin McCool was commissioned from Sandhurst in August 2014 and had been deployed in various regions, including Europe, the Middle East, the Falklands, and Africa. The Ministry of Defence described him as a “big family man” and a joy to work with. In an eulogy, it was mentioned that McCool had an impressive operational record and excelled in the military’s toughest courses. His fitness and endurance were legendary, and he even beat the whole Battalion on a two-miler run. His enthusiasm was infectious, and he had a mischievous twinkle in his eye that made him tremendous fun to be with. The British Army Training Unit in Kenya (BATUK) is based in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, with a small base in Nairobi. BATUK consists of approximately 100 permanent staff and an additional 280 personnel on short tours. Under an agreement with the Kenyan government, up to six infantry battalions per year conduct eight-week exercises in the country. The army also trains Kenyan troops to combat terrorism in the region.
