Suspect Apprehended by Police Dog after High-Speed Chase in Wisconsin Rapids

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. – In the early hours of Saturday morning, a dramatic incident unfolded in Wisconsin Rapids as local police utilized a highly trained police canine to apprehend a suspect who had attempted to flee from law enforcement.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:59 a.m. when a vigilant Wood County K9 Unit officer spotted a vehicle exhibiting reckless behavior, including excessive speed and erratic driving, along W. Grand Avenue in the City of Wisconsin Rapids. Sensing the need for immediate action, the officer activated the emergency lights and signaled the driver to pull over.

Despite the officer’s clear instructions, the driver did not comply immediately, leading to a brief but adrenaline-fueled chase. The pursuit finally came to an end when the suspect decided to stop the vehicle in a parking lot situated at the intersection of 12th Avenue S and Chase Street.

However, the story took an unexpected turn when the driver, later identified as 41-year-old Aaron J. Winters from Wisconsin Rapids, swiftly exited the car and began to flee on foot. Determined not to let the suspect escape justice, the deputy officer pursued him on foot, attempting to take him into custody.

Recognizing the resistance shown by the suspect, the deputy made a quick decision to deploy K9 Bingo, a highly trained police dog, to assist in subduing the fleeing individual. With remarkable skill and efficiency, K9 Bingo successfully apprehended the suspect, allowing the police to swiftly make the arrest.

Following the apprehension, law enforcement officials identified the suspect as Aaron J. Winters, a 41-year-old resident of Wisconsin Rapids. As a precautionary measure, Winters was immediately taken to a local hospital for a thorough medical evaluation before being transported to the Wood County Jail.

Winters now faces a series of serious charges, including battery to a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and the grave offense of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) for the third time.
