Pittsfield Native Air Force Member Jacob Galliher Killed in Osprey Crash near Japan

Accident – Death – Obituary News : PITTSFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – The community of Pittsfield is mourning the loss of one of their own after a tragic accident in Japan. Jacob “Jake” Galliher, a native of Pittsfield and a member of the U.S. Air Force, was one of the victims in the Osprey crash that occurred during a training mission off the coast of southern Japan on Wednesday.

The Osprey V-22, carrying eight crew members, crashed into the ocean. Galliher’s body was found and identified by officials, making him the only crew member that has been found so far. The search for the remaining seven crew members is still ongoing.

Galliher’s family has released a heartfelt statement expressing their gratitude for the support and condolences they have received from friends, community members, and the nation at large. Local officials, including U.S. Representative Richard Neal, Governor Maura Healey, Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Senator Edward J. Markey, have all expressed their condolences and support for the Galliher family. Galliher, a 2017 graduate of Taconic High School in Pittsfield, leaves behind his wife Ivy, two sons aged two years and seven weeks old, and his family members in Lanesborough. The cause of the Osprey crash is still under investigation. The aircraft had departed from the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni in Yamaguchi prefecture and was on its way to Kadena Air Base on Okinawa when it requested an emergency landing before disappearing from radar.
