According to the police, the accused, aged between 16 and 23 years, had been planning to target the doctor for days. Four of the accused were arrested, while the fifth, a juvenile, was apprehended.

The incident unfolded at the doctor’s clinic in North Delhi on Friday night. The doctor, identified as Nadeem Ahmed, was alone at the clinic when five men entered. One of them pretended to be sick and demanded to see the doctor. As there were no other staff members present, the men were allowed to enter Ahmed’s room without any suspicion.

In his complaint, Ahmed stated that the men first assaulted him and then threatened him with a country-made pistol. They demanded a sum of Rs 5 lakh as “protection money.” Ahmed was held captive and was only released when he assured the men that he would pay them.

The police swiftly registered a case and collected CCTV footage from the clinic and the surrounding area to identify the culprits. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Northeast, Joy N Tirkey, stated, “Teams were tasked to identify and arrest the accused at the earliest. With the help of one of the CCTVs from the clinic and local enquiry, two accused were identified.”

The police discovered that the accused were history sheeters and subsequently arrested 18-year-old Haider Ali and the juvenile. Based on their interrogation, the other gang members were identified as Faisal (18), Saqib (19), and Mohd Zaim (23), who were subsequently apprehended. Faisal was caught with the weapon used in the crime, while Saqib had been released on bail just two months ago.

One of the officers involved in the case revealed, “Zaim was the conspirator. He works as a scrap dealer in the area and hatched the plan to rob the doctor as he suspected the doctor was wealthy.”

Further investigations revealed that all the men resided in Bhajanpura and strategically chose to target the clinic after 8 pm, when there were fewer patients and staff present.

This shocking incident has raised concerns about the safety of doctors and medical practitioners. The medical fraternity has been demanding increased security measures to ensure the safety and well-being of healthcare professionals.

The police have assured that they are taking the matter seriously and will ensure that the accused face appropriate legal consequences for their actions. The doctors’ community has urged the authorities to provide better protection to medical professionals, especially those working in isolated clinics or late-night shifts.

It is crucial for such incidents to be thoroughly investigated and for strict action to be taken against the culprits. The safety and security of doctors, who play a crucial role in society, must be a top priority to ensure the smooth functioning of healthcare services..
