Accident – Death – Obituary News : A man in his late 40s was taken into custody after a collision involving a vehicle from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office in New Gloucester, Maine on Saturday night. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident, according to a news release.
The crash occurred just before midnight on Lewiston Road, prompting a response from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. The law enforcement agency revealed that the collision involved one of their vehicles. At the time of the accident, a deputy from the sheriff’s office was conducting a traffic stop on the shoulder of the northbound lane of Lewiston Road. However, a third vehicle struck the rear driver’s-side corner of the deputy’s vehicle. Surprisingly, the deputy was outside the parked cruiser, engaged in an unrelated investigation and conversing with the other driver when the crash took place.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage as a result of the collision, which the sheriff’s office described as “disabling damage.” Thankfully, no one involved in the incident suffered any injuries.
The operator of the suspect vehicle was identified as Christopher Clare, a 48-year-old resident of New Gloucester. Clare was driving a 2021 Toyota Corolla and allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. According to the deputies, Clare had a breath alcohol content that was nearly three times the legal limit. Consequently, he was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence.
The sheriff’s office stated that speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in the crash. However, the investigation is still ongoing.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division received assistance from the Crash Reconstruction Unit, Windham Police Department, and New Gloucester Fire Department during their investigation.
