Accident – Death – Obituary News : DA Announces Charges Against Man Shot by Police in Lancaster

Lancaster, PA – A man who was shot by Lancaster police on Wednesday is now facing multiple charges, including criminal attempted homicide. The Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office has identified the man as William Oneill, a 40-year-old resident of Lancaster. Currently, Oneill remains in critical but stable condition in the hospital, where he is under guard.

According to a statement from the DA’s office, the incident unfolded early Wednesday morning at around 4:40 a.m. The Lancaster City Bureau of Police received a dispatch to Oneill’s residence on Hershey Avenue following a request to remove a male causing a disturbance. The caller informed the police that Oneill was outside the residence with an AR-15 rifle and had fired the weapon twice during the call. Responding officers heard the second shot upon their arrival.

Upon reaching the residence at approximately 4:46 a.m., officers encountered Oneill in the side yard area, brandishing the AR-15 rifle. Disturbingly, video footage from one of the police vehicles showed Oneill raising the rifle and firing in the direction of the officers. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Oneill walked towards the front of the residence and pointed the rifle at another responding officer. In response to the imminent threat, three officers discharged their firearms, striking Oneill. He immediately dropped the weapon and fell to the ground.

A forensic team investigating the scene later discovered two empty shell casings and a live round in a side yard. The weapon used was identified as a Ruger AR-556 rifle, with a live round stuck in the chamber.

Shockingly, a subsequent criminal history check revealed that Oneill had previous criminal convictions in Pennsylvania for aggravated assault in 2001 and rape by forcible compulsion in 2008. These convictions made him ineligible to possess a firearm under state law.
