A Venomous Sea Snake Accidentally Caught and Released by Fishermen in Vizag

A hydrophis sea snake, known for its venomous nature, had a brief encounter with the shores of Andhra Pradesh after getting unintentionally trapped in a fisherman’s net. The incident took place at Sagar Nagar beach in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday. Fortunately, the snake was released back into the water, unharmed.

Measuring approximately seven feet, the reptile was identified as a member of the hydrophis genus, renowned for being the most venomous among all snake species. Dr. P Srinivasa Rao, Assistant Director of the State Fisheries Department, confirmed this distinction.

The Hydrophiinae snake family, comprising 52 known species, possesses venom capable of causing severe envenomation, which can be fatal if left untreated. The venom of a sea snake contains a lethal combination of neurotoxins and myotoxins, which can swiftly paralyze its prey and inflict muscle damage.

The hydrophis sea snake is not only venomous but also a common inhabitant of the Bay of Bengal, with at least three different species identified in the region. These reptiles are typically found in shallow waters, less than 100 feet deep, and tend to prefer habitats with corals or mud, depending on the specific species. While the snake primarily hunts on the seafloor, it periodically surfaces to breathe.

Its prey mainly consists of small fish that swim closer to the surface, inadvertently getting entangled in commercial fishing nets, as was the case with the snake discovered in Vizag. The reptile had been following a shoal of fish when it became ensnared in a fisherman’s net. Promptly, local wildlife officials were alerted, and the snake was safely returned to the sea.

Although sea snakes are not particularly aggressive towards humans, they may attack or bite if they feel threatened. It is essential for fishermen and beachgoers to exercise caution while encountering these creatures to avoid any potential harm.
