TRU Athlete Identified as Victim of Fatal Crash in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS, BC – The individual who tragically lost their life in a multi-vehicle crash in Kamloops has been identified as Owyn McInnis, a talented athlete from Thompson Rivers University (TRU).

McInnis, a fourth-year outside hitter from Guelph, Ontario, was a member of the TRU men’s volleyball team. He was involved in the collision on Wednesday, November 29, which claimed his life. Two of his teammates who were also in the vehicle sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Royal Inland Hospital.

The devastating news was confirmed by McInnis’s mother, Erin Walter, in a private Instagram post on Friday. She expressed her deep grief and stated that a criminal investigation is underway regarding the crash.

McInnis’s family had traveled to Kamloops over the weekend of November 24-26 to support and watch him play. The sudden loss has left them and the TRU community devastated.

In honor of McInnis’s memory, the TRU men’s volleyball team announced the establishment of the Owyn McInnis Memorial Men’s Volleyball Athletic Award. This award aims to commemorate McInnis’s passion for the sport and his contributions to the team. Generous donations totaling $20,000 have already been made by two donors.

The team expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support they have received during this difficult time. They acknowledged the outpouring of love and support from the community, which has provided some solace amidst the heartache.

The collision, which occurred around 3 p.m. on November 29, involved six vehicles and resulted in injuries to a total of 11 individuals. Seven of the injured were transported to the hospital for treatment.
