WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a recent development in a homicide investigation, a lead detective took the stand on November 30 to testify about a key eyewitness who appeared “frightened” in connection to a 2018 homicide case.

The defendant, Marquette Jordan, aged 32, is facing charges of first-degree murder while armed, assault, and carrying a dangerous weapon outside of a home or business with a prior felony. These charges stem from his alleged involvement in the fatal stabbing of 40-year-old Ivan Lynch on April 30, 2018, at the 900 block of 5th Street, SE.

Jordan had previously stood trial in April 2022, but the jury was unable to reach a verdict on the first-degree murder charge. However, he was convicted on lesser counts. The retrial began on November 14, and new evidence has come to light.

During the trial, body-worn camera footage was presented, showing Jordan claiming to have cancer. However, a medical doctor who examined him on May 1, 2018, found no signs or symptoms of the disease. According to the doctor, Jordan did not report any medical issues.

Furthermore, the prosecution called a detective from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to testify. The detective stated that he had recovered a cellphone, which was later identified as belonging to the victim, Ivan Lynch. This discovery adds weight to the prosecution’s case against Jordan.

Additionally, the detective testified that he observed bloodstains on Jordan’s clothes and promptly instructed the Department of Forensic Science (DFS) to collect the items for further analysis. During the investigation, a set of keys was also found in Jordan’s pockets, and they were later identified as Lynch’s car keys. These findings suggest a direct connection between Jordan and the crime scene.

The lead detective’s testimony also shed light on the initial altercation between Jordan and his ex-partner, which allegedly sparked the stabbing incident. According to the detective, the witness appeared “frightened, disheveled, and terrified” during her initial interview and was even shoeless. Recognizing her distressed state, the detective ensured she had sufficient time for her interview, and at one point, she was “balled up in the chair.” This eyewitness account adds another layer of credibility to the case against Jordan.

The trial is set to resume on December 4, with further witness testimonies expected. As the proceedings continue, it remains to be seen how this new evidence and the eyewitness testimony will impact the final verdict.
