Accident – Death – Obituary News : Local Man Arrested for Second Vehicle Theft in One Month

An area man has been apprehended for his involvement in stealing a vehicle for the second time in just one month. The incident took place on Saturday, November 25, when a St. Clair resident reported the theft of his 2010 Hyundai Accent from his residence. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office was provided with surveillance footage that clearly showed the suspect committing the theft. Sheriff Steve Pelton stated that the victim was able to identify the suspect.

Thanks to the cooperation between law enforcement agencies, officers from the Pacific Police Department located the stolen Accent at a Pilot gas station on November 29. Upon their arrival, they discovered a female passenger inside the vehicle, while the male suspect, later identified as 30-year-old Joseph Weatherby from Pacific, was found inside the gas station. Franklin County sheriff’s deputies promptly arrived at the scene to continue their investigation into the vehicle theft. During a search of Weatherby, law enforcement officers found a plastic bag containing capsules filled with a white powdery substance.

As a result, Weatherby was placed under arrest and transported to the Franklin County Adult Detention Facility. He is now facing charges of stealing a motor vehicle, with his bail set at $25,000.

This is not the first time Weatherby has been involved in vehicle theft. In fact, just a month ago, on November 1, he was arrested for allegedly stealing a Jeep Cherokee. Prior to that, in September, he was taken into custody after attempting to flee from sheriff’s deputies for the second time within a span of slightly over a month. During that arrest, he was found to have multiple active warrants issued by the Pacific and Eureka police departments.

The seized bag of capsules, containing the suspicious white powdery substance, has been sent to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Laboratory for further analysis. Additional charges may be filed pending the results of the laboratory’s examination.

The arrest of Joseph Weatherby serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for vigilance in safeguarding personal property against theft. Residents are encouraged to remain cautious and take necessary precautions, such as locking their vehicles and securing their residences, to deter potential criminals.

As the investigation continues, authorities are determined to gather all evidence and present a strong case against Weatherby. The stolen vehicle has been recovered and will be returned to its rightful owner once the legal proceedings are completed.

The community can rest assured that law enforcement agencies are committed to maintaining public safety and holding individuals accountable for their actions. Cooperation between citizens and law enforcement remains vital in preventing and solving crimes in our area.
