A man has been apprehended for colliding with a bicyclist and fleeing the accident scene in the early hours of Saturday morning, as reported by Plant City police.

Shortly after 2:00 a.m., law enforcement received a 911 call reporting a collision involving a blue Ford F-150 pickup truck and a cyclist.

The incident occurred on N. Park Rd., near the intersection of E. Sam Allen Rd, according to authorities.

After the accident, officials state that the driver, identified as John Keith Jones, initially halted and exited the vehicle alongside a witness.

According to Plant City police, Jones inquired with the witness if they had contacted emergency services. Upon learning that the witness had indeed called the police, Jones hastily returned to his truck and fled the scene.

The initial witness asked a second individual who arrived at the scene to pursue Jones, enabling the second witness to obtain the license plate number of the truck, as per authorities.

Officials state that the second witness returned to the site in order to relay this information to the police.

Utilizing the license plate details, investigators managed to locate Jones at a residence situated in the 2900 block of E. Williams Rd. Law enforcement officers observed the truck, which exhibited signs of damage consistent with the accident.

According to the police, they successfully contacted Jones, and the first witness was brought to the address to confirm Jones as the hit-and-run driver.

Jones has been arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death or serious bodily injury, as per officials.
