SALEM: A 32-year-old man identified as K Bhoopathi, the owner of a private drug de-addiction centre in Salem, was taken into custody on Friday in connection with the tragic demise of a 29-year-old patient who was undergoing treatment at the facility. The deceased, K Chandrasekar, had been admitted to the Magudanchavadi facility on November 26 after developing an addiction to alcohol following the recent passing of his father.

On Thursday midnight, Chandrasekar’s family received a distressing call from the centre, informing them that he had become unconscious. Upon arrival, his mother Easwari and other relatives discovered bruises on his body and immediately rushed him to a nearby private hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, the doctors who examined him declared Chandrasekar dead, and his body was then transferred to Salem GH.

Overwhelmed by the tragic loss of their loved one, Easwari lodged a complaint with the Magudanchavadi police station regarding the incident. According to the authorities, Chandrasekar had been behaving aggressively at the de-addiction centre on Thursday, refusing to sleep and shouting. In response, the owner, Bhoopathi, allegedly tied him up. Chandrasekar struggled to free himself, resulting in the visible bruises. Tragically, as he remained restrained for over four hours, his pulse dropped, leading to his untimely demise.

Bhoopathi, who has been operating the centre for the past eight months, was charged under Section 304 (part ii) of the IPC and subsequently arrested on Friday night. Currently, there are 24 other individuals undergoing treatment at the facility, and arrangements are being made to transfer them to alternative centres, as stated by the police. Meanwhile, Chandrasekar’s family, overcome with grief and anger, refused to claim his body and staged a protest that lasted until Friday night.
