NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — In a shocking turn of events, a business operations manager in Orange County, California, took matters into his own hands and devised a clever plan to catch a serial plant thief who had been plaguing his business for several months. The Newport Beach Police Department announced the thrilling news, stating that a suspect had been “apprehended in the act” of stealing merchandise from Roger’s Gardens. The suspect was identified as Michael Meek, according to the police.

Over the course of several months, surveillance cameras at Roger’s Gardens captured the suspect sneaking into the business at night and making off with valuable items. Frustrated by the repeated thefts, Sullivan decided to take action. “We have security cameras all over the store, including our parking lot,” Sullivan revealed. “We’re losing things. He’s taking large and expensive items like a 150-pound fountain and $300 pots.”

On November 16, Sullivan implemented a plan to catch the thief red-handed. He discreetly planted Apple AirTags, small tracking devices, in multiple items. This time, when the suspect returned to the business and stole additional items, Sullivan was able to track the location of the stolen merchandise using the AirTags.

“I saw one of the AirTags had moved to a location in Irvine, so I had the address at that point. I took a screenshot of it and I sent it to the detectives at 2 in the morning,” Sullivan explained. Newport Beach police officers promptly acted on the information provided by Sullivan and went to the location.

To their astonishment, the suspect’s backyard had become a sanctuary of stolen greenery, as police described it. The suspect had brazenly taken prized bushes, carefully snatched exotic plants, and even made off with an entire bench, leaving Roger’s Gardens in disarray. These thefts had occurred about four times over a period of a few months.

Thanks to Sullivan’s quick thinking and the use of innovative technology, investigators were able to recover approximately $8,000 worth of stolen items, which were promptly returned to Roger’s Gardens. Michael Meek was subsequently arrested and charged with grand theft.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of taking proactive measures to protect businesses and their assets. Sullivan’s ingenuity and determination ultimately led to the apprehension of a serial thief who had been causing significant losses to Roger’s Gardens. The use of AirTags proved to be an effective tool in recovering stolen merchandise and bringing the perpetrator to justice.

As Roger’s Gardens continues to flourish, they can now rest assured that their beloved plants and merchandise are safe from the clutches of thieves, thanks to the vigilance and resourcefulness of their dedicated operations manager..
