Authorities in Los Angeles have made an arrest in connection with the recent homicides of three homeless men, according to officials. The suspect has been identified as 33-year-old Jerrid Joseph Powell, as reported by NBC. City officials had previously appealed to the public for assistance after three unhoused men were found murdered within a four-day period.

The first victim was shot while sleeping on a couch in a rear alley in the Westmont neighborhood. The second victim was killed in downtown Los Angeles while waiting for his phone to charge. The third killing occurred in Lincoln Heights, where the victim was sleeping on a sidewalk. The victims have been identified as Jose Bolanos, Mark Diggs, and a 52-year-old Hispanic man whose name has not been released pending family notification.

Authorities took Mr. Powell into custody in connection with the murder of Nicholas Simbolon, a 42-year-old father-of-two who was followed to his home in San Dimas, robbed, and fatally shot. During the investigation, Mr. Powell’s vehicle was linked to surveillance footage from the scene of the attack on Diggs. A gun was also recovered from the car.

Police Chief Michel Moore noted that there were similarities in the way the crimes were carried out, indicating a potential link. All the murders occurred before 5 am, and the victims were found sleeping on sidewalks or in alleyways when they were shot. Chief Moore warned that the perpetrator seemed to target victims who were alone, rather than homeless encampments.

The Los Angeles Police Department previously released surveillance images of the alleged serial killer and his vehicle. The suspect can be seen wearing a light-colored hoodie and dark pants. However, Chief Moore stated that additional video footage leading up to the third homicide would not be released at this time.

In response to the string of killings, the city has established temporary winter shelters for the homeless and increased patrols in open areas where homeless individuals tend to sleep. Mayor Karen Bass urged the public to spread awareness about the investigation and encouraged the homeless population to seek shelter and support.

Chief Moore emphasized that the investigation involved multiple homicide detectives and a forensic team to process evidence efficiently. He also revealed that leaders from over 40 agencies have been kept informed of the developments in the case.
