Tragic Multi-Vehicle Collision Claims Life of University Student in Southern Interior of B.C.

Authorities in the southern Interior of British Columbia are currently conducting an investigation into a devastating multi-vehicle crash that resulted in the untimely death of a university student. The victim has been identified as a member of the volleyball team at Thompson Rivers University.

According to a statement released by the Kamloops RCMP, the incident occurred at approximately 3 p.m. on Thursday at the intersection of McGill Road and University Drive, just outside the university campus. Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene following reports of the collision.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the accident took place when a Dodge Ram truck veered off the road and struck several small trees before colliding with a stationary Volkswagen at a red light. The impact of this initial collision subsequently caused the Volkswagen to collide with four other vehicles.

Authorities have confirmed that all three occupants of the Volkswagen, who are in their twenties, were immediately rushed to the hospital for treatment. Tragically, one of the individuals succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The identities of the other two occupants have not been disclosed, but it has been reported that they sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash.

The Kamloops RCMP have launched a thorough investigation into the incident and are urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision or possesses relevant information to come forward and assist with the ongoing inquiry.

Curtis Atkinson, the athletic director at Thompson Rivers University, expressed his deep sorrow and condolences, revealing that the individual who tragically lost their life was a valued member of the university’s volleyball team. The deceased student was traveling with two teammates at the time of the accident.

In the wake of this devastating event, the university’s administration and staff have been actively providing support and counseling services to the student athletes affected by the tragedy. Additionally, academic accommodations are being arranged to ensure that these grieving individuals receive the necessary support to cope with this heart-wrenching loss.

The Kamloops RCMP have confirmed that two other individuals, who were traveling in a separate vehicle, sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash. After receiving medical attention, they are currently in stable condition at a local hospital.
