Accident – Death – Obituary News : Coimbatore City Police were left astounded by the audacity and agility of a 24-year-old burglar who broke into Jos Alukkas Jewellery in Coimbatore city during the early hours of Tuesday. The suspect, identified as Vijayakumar from Devareddiyur near Harur in Tamil Nadu’s Dharmapuri district, managed to evade capture by climbing 15 feet to the roof and making a narrow escape.

Described by Deputy Commissioner G Chandeesh as a “real-life Spiderman,” Vijayakumar’s criminal record revealed at least four previous cases of burglary. However, this time he left behind crucial clues, including his identity captured on CCTV cameras. With the evidence obtained, the police were able to recover the stolen goods and subsequently arrested his wife.

Vijayakumar’s daring entry into the jewellery store involved breaking through a wall and squeezing through a narrow opening before climbing three floors. In a calculated move, he changed clothes inside the store before carefully selecting pieces of jewellery weighing around 150 sovereigns, equivalent to three kilograms.

The fact that the burglar alarm at the store was not functioning on that day due to maintenance raised suspicions that Vijayakumar might have had prior knowledge of the store’s layout. The deliberate manner in which he moved around, methodically selecting gold and diamond ornaments, further reinforced this belief and led the police to suspect the involvement of an insider.

When Vijayakumar made his escape, he left behind a shirt near the store, which contained a Pollachi-Coimbatore bus ticket in its pocket. Partial fingerprints on a CCTV camera also provided valuable leads for the police investigation.

Utilizing the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network Systems and the InterOperable Criminal Justice System, the police analyzed over 350 CCTV clips to trace Vijayakumar’s movements from the jewellery store to the Coimbatore bus stand and eventually to a friend’s house in Anamalai. This led to the recovery of the stolen goods from both Vijayakumar’s house and that of a relative in Palacode.

During the recovery of the jewellery, Vijayakumar’s wife, Narmada, was taken into custody. Commissioner V Balakrishnan stated that she had an active role in the crime from an early stage. The police also suspect that Vijayakumar had assistance from another individual who had knowledge of the jewellery store’s construction and layout.

Despite being traced to his hideout in Anamalai, Vijayakumar managed to escape once again. Another police team had arrived at the location a few hours earlier in connection with a bike theft case, and Vijayakumar took advantage of their distraction. Climbing up to a 15-foot high roof, he removed a single mud tile and slipped away into the darkness, evading capture.

The rooftop escape was described as dangerous and dramatic by the police. Vijayakumar’s wife later revealed that he would not have attempted such a risky maneuver if he had known about the presence of the police team investigating the bike theft case.

Coimbatore City Police continue their relentless pursuit of Vijayakumar, determined to bring him to justice for his string of burglaries. The agility and resourcefulness displayed by the “real-life Spiderman” have left the police force in awe, as they work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of the community..
