Accident – Death – Obituary News : Man Charged with Second-Degree Murder in Connection to Deadly Shooting in East Kansas City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 31-year-old man, Tamon Daniel, is facing multiple felony charges in connection to a deadly shooting that occurred on Tuesday in east Kansas City, Missouri. Jackson County prosecutors have charged Daniel with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action.

According to court documents, the incident took place near the intersection of E. 49th Terrace and Heritage Avenue, not far from U.S. 40 Highway and Noland Road. Kansas City police officers responded to a shooting report around 4 p.m. When they arrived at the scene, they found Daniel waving them down and surrendering. He was then placed under arrest.

During the arrest, officers discovered an AR-15 style pistol, a gray jacket, and a cell phone on the ground next to Daniel. Neighbors directed the officers down the street where they found a black Dodge Journey crashed into the woods. The victim, identified as 21-year-old Jayden James, was found dead in a vacant lot in a cul-de-sac nearby. He had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

The incident has been ruled a homicide. A witness stated that a man armed with a rifle fired at him and the deceased victim through the windshield of their car. However, no firearms were found in or around the witness’ vehicle or the victim’s vehicle.

During questioning, Daniel claimed that he had gone to the apartment complex to protect his sister. He alleged that two individuals he believed were involved in kidnapping his sister were in a vehicle at the complex and were armed. According to court records, Daniel stated that the men pointed their guns at him, and in response, he pointed his rifle at them.

Daniel maintained that he did not fire shots at the men while they were near their vehicle. He claimed that the men ran on foot, and he chased them in his vehicle in an attempt to run them over. Daniel believed that he was able to run over one of the men. After crashing his vehicle, he got out and shot the man he hit approximately 4-8 times with his assault rifle. He then walked up the hill, notified the police, and surrendered to them.

No firearms were found in or around the victim’s vehicle, according to court documents. Tamon Daniel is scheduled to appear in court on Friday at 1 p.m. as the legal proceedings continue.
