Yuval Doron Castleman, an Israeli attorney, succumbs to injuries sustained during a shooting attack

Tel Aviv [Israel], December 1 (ANI/TPS): A tragic incident unfolded on Thursday morning at a bus stop near the entrance to Jerusalem when two Palestinian terrorists opened fire on rush-hour commuters. In a heroic act, Yuval Doron Castleman, a 37-year-old attorney, responded by firing on the attackers, ultimately sacrificing his life in the process.

Castleman, who happened to be at the bus stop at the time of the attack, along with two off-duty soldiers, managed to neutralize the terrorists. However, Castleman himself sustained critical injuries during the exchange of gunfire.

Tragically, Castleman’s death brings the death toll from the attack to four. The other victims include 73-year-old Rabbi Elimelech Wasserman, a respected judge in the rabbinical court in Ashdod; Hanna Ifergan, a 67-year-old principal of a girl’s school in Beit Shemesh; and 24-year-old Livia Dickman from Jerusalem. Additionally, five other victims are currently receiving medical treatment in hospitals.

The two terrorists responsible for the attack have been identified as Murad Nemer and his brother, Ibrahim, both in their 30s and associated with Hamas. Notably, both had previously served time in prison for their involvement in various terror activities. The Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) revealed that Murad had been imprisoned from 2010 to 2020 for planning attacks under the guidance of terror commanders based in Gaza.

Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on Telegram, further heightening tensions in the region.

In response to the incident, authorities announced plans to demolish the home of the Nemer brothers, which had already been mapped out for demolition on Thursday night. Additionally, police have increased patrols in the city due to the renewed fighting in the Gaza Strip.

Benny Gantz, a member of the War Cabinet and Minister-without-Portfolio, emphasized that the attack strengthened Israel’s determination to continue their fight against Hamas in Gaza. Gantz stated, “This terror attack is further proof of our obligation to continue to fight with strength and determination against murderous terrorism, which threatens our citizens. In Jerusalem, Gaza, in Judea and Samaria, and everywhere.”

Highlighting the need for self-defense, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir underscored the importance of easing gun permit restrictions. Following Hamas’s October 7 massacre, gun license requests have surged.

Ben-Gvir stated, “This event proves once again how much we must not show weakness, how much we should talk to Hamas only through the intentions, only through the war. But this event illustrates another thing, how important the policy of distributing weapons is; despite the criticism of all kinds of parties, I will continue this policy of handing out weapons everywhere, both to emergency rooms and to civilians. Weapons save lives, we see it time after time, wherever there are weapons, citizens, policemen, and soldiers save lives. And this weapon can save us and it proves itself time and time again.”
