Accident – Death – Obituary News : STUART, Fla. (WSVN) – A 20-year-old university athlete is currently recovering in hospital after what authorities in Martin County are hailing as a miraculous escape from a shooting incident. The young man was walking home when an unidentified gunman opened fire, and officials are crediting divine intervention for saving his life, with his phone likely acting as a life-saving shield.

Surveillance footage has been released, revealing the vehicle that Martin County Sheriff’s deputies are currently seeking in connection with the incident. The victim had just left a convenience store on Wednesday night and was on his way home when shots were suddenly fired.

“As he was approaching his house, a vehicle pulled up, and the front passenger of that vehicle began firing at him with a high-powered rifle,” shared Martin County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy John Budensiek.

Remarkably, the victim, who happened to be on a phone call at the time, was hit as one of the rounds penetrated his index finger and then passed through the phone he was holding. Budensiek emphasized that the situation could have easily turned into a tragic homicide.

“It’s only by the grace of God that we’re not discussing a homicide case today,” he said. “It’s not just an attempted homicide case. It was just inches away from becoming a full-fledged homicide case.”

Local residents were left in shock and expressed deep concern upon learning about the incident.

“It’s terrible! Who would do something like that or target people for specific reasons? It’s incomprehensible,” said Nathan McFadden, a resident of Port Salerno.

Ralph Terrell, a resident of Manatee Creek, also commented on the incident, saying, “It’s usually really peaceful around here. Nothing out of the ordinary happens. Everyone tends to mind their own business and watch out for each other. This is highly unusual.”

In adherence to Marcy’s Law, the victim’s identity, a 20-year-old college football player, has been withheld.

Friends and members of the community are hopeful for his swift recovery.

“I hope the young man will be alright. He’s young and just starting to live his life. It’s truly terrible. It really is,” expressed McFadden.

Thankfully, the victim’s injuries are non-life-threatening.
