The young man’s mother had traveled from Bangkok with the intention of taking him to a rehabilitation center. However, instead of finding her son ready for treatment, she arrived home to attend her father’s funeral.

Local police were alerted to the shooting, which resulted in the death of a 68-year-old man, identified as Pradit (surname withheld). Upon arrival at the scene, authorities discovered his body with a gunshot wound to the left side of his chest. Meanwhile, Yotsaphat had fled the scene after committing the crime.

According to Pradit’s 66-year-old wife, Wann, the couple had been raising their grandson since he was very young. However, Yotsaphat’s drug addiction began during his high school years, and he had been without a job ever since. His days were spent under the influence of drugs, often asking his grandparents for money or stealing food from their pantry, which eventually led them to lock it up.

On the day of the incident, tensions escalated when Yotsaphat threatened to harm his grandmother. Thankfully, his mother intervened and stopped him. However, this altercation led Yotsaphat downstairs, where he came across Pradit, who was on his way to feed the cows. An argument ensued, tragically ending with Yotsaphat shooting his own grandfather.

The 46-year-old mother of the perpetrator, Malai, tearfully recounted the severity of her son’s drug addiction, which had forced her to install CCTV cameras to monitor his behavior. She had sought help from the police in the past, reporting her son’s violent behavior towards his grandparents and his intent to harm them. However, the police would only detain him for a brief period before releasing him.

Malai had hoped that taking her son to a rehabilitation center would finally put an end to his addiction. However, she never could have imagined returning home to the devastating scene of her father’s funeral instead. The shocking incident has left the family in deep sorrow and the local community in shock. Currently, the police are actively searching for Yotsaphat.

The tragedy highlights the urgent need for stronger measures to address drug addiction in Thailand. Families like Yotsaphat’s are left grappling with the devastating consequences of addiction, while the authorities’ limited interventions do little to prevent further harm.

As the search for Yotsaphat continues, the community mourns the loss of Pradit and hopes for a future where individuals struggling with addiction receive the support and treatment they desperately need..
