Deadly Shooting During Child Sex Crime Investigation in Kannapolis

Kannapolis, N.C. – New Information Released by Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office has provided additional details regarding a tragic incident that unfolded in Kannapolis on Wednesday afternoon, resulting in a deadly shooting. The joint operation, conducted by deputies from the Cabarrus Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Kannapolis Police Department, focused on combating internet crimes against children and child sex predators.

According to authorities, at approximately 1:45 pm, law enforcement officials arrested a 33-year-old suspect who had engaged in online conversations with an individual he believed to be a 15-year-old female. The suspect arrived at a location on Bellwood Place, near Vance Street, under the false pretense of engaging in sexual activities with the teenager.

Upon entering the premises, the suspect resisted arrest, prompting officers to take immediate action. The suspect, identified as Lamar Deshawn Young, reportedly drew a weapon and fired at the officers attempting to apprehend him. In response, officers from both agencies fired back.

Fortunately, none of the officers sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire. However, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Thankfully, no civilians were harmed during the incident.

Young, a resident of Harrisburg, N.C., had recently been released from federal prison and was on active parole at the time of the shooting. As part of his release conditions, he was required to wear a GPS ankle monitor. Young had a history of convictions, having served time in both state and federal prison for manslaughter, as well as various drug and weapons-related offenses.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has taken charge of the ongoing investigation, in accordance with the policies of the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office and the Kannapolis Police Department.

Following standard protocol for officer-involved shooting incidents, the officers who were present during the incident have been placed on administrative leave. Once the investigation is concluded, all relevant information will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review.

Kannapolis City Councilman, Darrell Jackson, commended the swift actions of the officers involved and highlighted the rarity of such crimes in the area.

“Having been part of this community for 37 years, we have never experienced anything of this nature,” said Councilman Jackson. “We commend our law enforcement for their vigilance in monitoring and safeguarding our children. It is reassuring to have such confidence in our police department.”

The incident has stirred deep concern within the community, and local authorities are determined to ensure the safety and protection of its residents, particularly vulnerable children. The collaborative efforts of the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office and the Kannapolis Police Department serve as a reminder of their unwavering commitment to combatting child exploitation and preventing such heinous crimes from occurring within their jurisdiction.
