French Woman Arrested in Germany for Alleged War Crimes in Syria

BERLIN (AP) — German authorities announced on Thursday that they have apprehended a French woman suspected of committing war crimes in Syria after joining the Islamic State extremist group. The arrest took place on Tuesday in the city of Trier located in western Germany, according to Germany’s federal prosecutor.

The woman, identified as Samra N. while respecting German privacy regulations, is believed to have been involved with two foreign terrorist organizations during her teenage years, stated the prosecutor’s office. She had reportedly travelled to Syria in September 2013, initially joining Jabhat al-Nusra and subsequently marrying one of the group’s fighters according to Islamic customs. By November 2013, the couple had joined the ranks of the Islamic State extremist group.

During her time in Syria, N. allegedly engaged in efforts to persuade individuals residing in Germany to also travel to Syria and join Jabhat al-Nusra. Additionally, she temporarily accommodated a woman who had been convinced to leave the country through her influence, the statement indicated.

The charges against the suspect further claim that N. played a significant role in her husband’s activities, managing their household and assisting him in acquiring military equipment for the Islamic State.

Furthermore, N. is accused of participating in two instances where, in her husband’s absence on combat missions, she occupied women’s residences that had been seized by the Islamic State after displacing their original occupants. These actions are considered “war crimes against property” under German law.

Prosecutors revealed that N. returned to Germany in early 2014, but continued to be affiliated with the Islamic State until at least February 2015. The reasons behind her decision to travel to Germany, despite being a French citizen, remain unclear.

This arrest marks a significant step in Germany’s ongoing efforts to bring individuals associated with terrorist organizations to justice. The country has been actively pursuing cases against those involved in war crimes committed during the Syrian conflict.
