20-year-old J Subaskumar Basvan from Bihar murdered in Madurai district by armed robbers

Accident – Death – Obituary News : Madurai: In a shocking incident, a 20-year-old guest worker from Bihar was brutally murdered and another worker was grievously injured in an attack by armed robbers near Thoppur in Madurai district on Tuesday night. The deceased has been identified as J Subaskumar Basvan from Supaul.

According to the police, Subaskumar and his coworker B Sannikumar Basvan, 19, were coolie workers at the construction site of a new building at the Government Hospital for Respiratory Medicine in Thoppur. On the fateful night, around 8 pm, Subaskumar and Sannikumar were walking back to their place of stay after buying groceries near Moonandipatti village when they were approached by three unidentified individuals.

The attackers, riding a two-wheeler, pretended to ask the unsuspecting workers for the time. As Subaskumar took out his mobile phone to check the time, two of the robbers suddenly got down and snatched it. A scuffle broke out between the workers and the robbers as they tried to retrieve the phone. In the midst of the struggle, the robbers pulled out knives and viciously attacked Subaskumar and Sannikumar. Both workers sustained stab wounds in their chests.

Tragically, Subaskumar succumbed to his injuries and died on the spot due to excessive bleeding. Sannikumar, on the other hand, was left unconscious with a severe injury to his left side rib. Passersby who witnessed the horrific incident immediately alerted the nearby Austinpatti police, who quickly arrived at the scene. They arranged for a 108 ambulance to rush Sannikumar to Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in a critical condition. Meanwhile, the body of Subaskumar was recovered and sent for postmortem examination.

The Austinpatti police have registered a case of murder for gain under sections 394 and 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Efforts are currently underway to trace the whereabouts of the robbers. District Superintendent of Police (SP) R Shiva Prasad, along with Madurai Range Deputy Inspector General R V Ramya Bharati, visited the crime scene on Wednesday to oversee the investigation. The SP stated that three special teams have been formed to apprehend the absconding culprits, and the investigation is ongoing. Meanwhile, Sannikumar remains under treatment at GRH, battling for his life.

This unfortunate incident has once again highlighted the issue of safety and security for guest workers in the country. It is imperative for authorities to take immediate action to ensure the safety of all individuals, especially those who migrate from different states for work. Such incidents not only cause immense grief and suffering for the victims and their families but also raise concerns about the overall law and order situation in the region.
