16-Year-Old Boy Faces Attempted Murder Charge in Miami Drive-By Shooting

MIAMI – A 16-year-old teenager has been charged with attempted murder following a drive-by shooting incident that left one person hospitalized last month in Miami. The incident took place in broad daylight around 11:30 a.m. on October 18th, outside a local grocery store in the 6900 block of Northwest 17th Avenue.

Upon arrival at the scene, detectives discovered a male victim who had sustained a gunshot wound. He was immediately rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center for medical treatment.

According to an arrest report, a male companion of the victim stated that as they were leaving the corner store, they noticed a black Maxima following them. The companion identified the person inside the vehicle as 16-year-old Omari Afelix Terry from Miami. Terry allegedly fired multiple rounds in their direction, leading to the victim being struck by a bullet in the thigh. The injured victim then sought refuge in nearby bushes.

After the shooting, the black Maxima quickly fled the scene in an unknown direction, leaving the victims behind. Miami police detectives, who arrived shortly after the incident, discovered seven bullet casings scattered between the parking lot and Northwest 70th Street.

An investigation was launched, and authorities interviewed a second victim whose statement corroborated the account provided by the male companion. Detectives also managed to obtain surveillance footage of the shooting from a nearby business, aiding in their investigation.

Omari Afelix Terry was subsequently apprehended on October 20th at around 4 p.m. He was taken to a nearby juvenile assessment center and is now facing one count of second-degree attempted murder, as per court records.

During police questioning, Terry waived his Miranda rights and provided a statement, the details of which have been redacted from the arrest report. However, Terry denied the allegations of possessing a firearm, claiming that he had given it to 19-year-old Denzel Robinson, who was with him in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.

As of Thursday, Terry remains in custody without bond at the Metrowest Detention Center in Miami-Dade County.
