Victim of Lake Mead Homicide in 2022 Remains Unidentified

Accident – Death – Obituary News : LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Clark County and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department are seeking assistance from the public in identifying a homicide victim whose remains were discovered at Lake Mead in 2022.

Last year, the falling water levels at the lake exposed four sets of human remains. The Clark County’s Office of Coroner/Medical Examiner has successfully identified three of those sets of remains.

The remains found on July 25, August 6, and August 16, 2022, near the shoreline of Boulder Beach were identified as belonging to Claude Russell Pensinger from Las Vegas. Pensinger, who disappeared on July 14, 1998, was 52 years old at the time. The cause and manner of his death remain undetermined.

In another discovery, contractors working near the marina in the Callville Bay area found a set of remains on October 17, 2022. Additional remains belonging to the same person were found on October 19. The victim was identified as Donald P. Smith from North Las Vegas, who drowned in April 1974 at the age of 39.

On May 7, remains were found in the Callville Bay area and identified as Thomas Erndt, a 42-year-old resident of Las Vegas who drowned on August 2, 2022.

The most recent victim was found in a barrel at Hemenway Harbor on May 1, 2022. Investigators determined that he died from a gunshot wound, ruling it a homicide. Based on the clothing and footwear found in the barrel, authorities believe the man was killed sometime in the mid-1970s or early 1980s. However, his identity remains unknown. Facial approximation images of the man have been released by the authorities in an effort to identify him.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations office in Quantico, Virginia, created these images, which have also been shared with the National Missing and Unidentified Person’s System to assist in the identification process.
