Accident – Death – Obituary News : Primary Three Pupil Found Dead After School Denies Him Holiday Due to Unpaid Fees

In a tragic turn of events, a nine-year-old Primary Three pupil at Coloh Children Foundation School in Kyazanga Town Council, Lwengo District was found dead in the school dormitory. The young boy had completed his end-of-term promotion examinations with high grades and was eagerly looking forward to a relaxing holiday. However, his joy quickly turned into despair when he was blocked from leaving the school premises due to unpaid fees.

The school closed for holidays on November 24, but the child’s parents had not cleared the outstanding balance of Shs100,000 ($28) in school fees. As a result, the young boy was left behind with two other defaulters, a girl and a boy. While the boy was eventually released, the child remained alone in the dormitory, which left him feeling isolated and dejected.

Tragically, on November 25, his lifeless body was discovered hanging from a rope tied to one of the triple-decker metallic beds in the dormitory. The acting Southern Regional police spokesman, Mr Jamada Wandera, stated that preliminary investigations indicated that the child had taken his own life as a result of the frustration caused by the school administration.

According to Mr Wandera, the school director, Mr Chris Matovu, had instructed the head teacher, Mr Julius Ssekatawa, to detain the three pupils until their parents cleared the outstanding fees. When the late child’s sister went to pick him up from the school on November 24, she was stopped by Mr Kagenda, the bursar, who insisted that the family had to first settle the fees. This resulted in the child being left alone in the dormitory while his peers went home for the holidays.

The school management, although slow to break the news, eventually reported the incident to the police. Ms Pamela Kahuma, a police officer attached to Mbirizi Police Station, led detectives to the scene and confirmed the signs of suicide on the child’s body, including his tongue protruding and faeces on his body.

In response to the tragic incident, three school administrators, including the school director, head teacher, and bursar, have been arrested to assist the police with their investigations. They will be charged with unlawful confinement leading to the death of a pupil. Mr Wandera emphasized that school head teachers and directors must refrain from confining learners over unpaid fees, as schools are not authorized confinement places.

The heartbreaking incident has left the community in shock and mourning. Mr Sulaiman Ssekabitto, a resident living close to the school, expressed his disbelief at the tragedy and revealed that they were denied access to the school premises after news of the child’s suicide spread. The child’s mother, Ms Sarah Natukunda, demanded answers from the school administrators, questioning whether a mere Shs100,000 ($28) fee balance was worth her son’s life. She also mentioned that she has been raising her children alone since the death of her husband.

As the investigation continues, authorities and the community at large are grappling with the devastating loss of a young life and are calling for stricter regulations to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
