CLEVELAND (WOIO/Gray News) – The Ohio State Highway Patrol has released its preliminary findings and body camera footage regarding the horrific five-vehicle collision that occurred in Licking County, Ohio on November 14, resulting in the tragic deaths of six individuals and leaving 20 injured, as reported by WOIO.

The catastrophic accident involved a charter bus carrying members of the Tusky Valley High School marching band, which claimed the lives of three students.

According to the preliminary report, the vehicles involved in the collision have been identified as Units 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Unit 1, positioned at the rear of the car line, was a tractor-trailer. Unit 2, an SUV carrying a teacher and two band volunteers, was ahead of the tractor-trailer. Unit 3 was the charter bus with the band members, positioned in front of the SUV. Unit 4 was another SUV located ahead of the charter bus, while Unit 5 was another tractor-trailer leading the procession.

The report reveals that the accident occurred in a chain reaction when Units 2, 3, 4, and 5 were slowing down due to an earlier incident on the road.

Unit 1, a tractor-trailer owned by Mid State Systems Inc., collided with Unit 2, subsequently crashing into Unit 3, the charter bus. In a horrific turn of events, the tractor-trailer “overrode” the SUV, meaning it ran over and came to rest on top of it, as confirmed by Ohio State Highway Patrol authorities who arrived at the scene.

Following the initial collision, the tractor-trailer struck the rear of the charter bus, which then collided with Unit 4, causing it to spin out of the way. Finally, the charter bus collided with Unit 5, the leading tractor-trailer.

The preliminary report highlights that the tractor-trailer at the rear of the line was found to be “following too close,” which ultimately contributed to initiating the chain-reaction collision.

No other vehicle involved was found to have played a significant contributing role in the accident, according to the report.
