Accident – Death – Obituary News : VALDOSTA – A 52-year-old man has been apprehended by Valdosta Police Officers on charges of aggravated assault following a thorough investigation into a shooting incident.
The suspect, identified as Damion McKinney, a 44-year-old African American resident of Valdosta, was taken into custody after allegedly perpetrating a violent attack. The victim, Jerry Rowley, a 52-year-old Caucasian male, was found on November 23, 2023, at around 9:50 pm in the 300 block of East Adair Street. A concerned citizen had contacted emergency services to report Rowley’s apparent fall and observed blood coming from his head. However, upon arrival, first responders discovered that the victim had sustained severe facial injuries, including a gunshot wound.
In response to the incident, detectives and Crime Scene Personnel were dispatched to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation. Through meticulous examination and interviews, the investigators ascertained that Rowley had been shot approximately an hour prior to his discovery. Despite the assailant being initially unknown, diligent detective work, including following up on various tips and conducting door-to-door canvassing in the vicinity, eventually led to the identification of Damion McKinney as the shooter. The investigation revealed that the assault on Rowley had been unprovoked and carried out with malicious intent.
On November 24, 2023, at approximately 8:00 pm, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for McKinney and secured a search warrant for his residence. The law enforcement officials successfully apprehended McKinney without incident and subsequently conducted a search of his home. During the search, detectives discovered compelling evidence linking McKinney to the shooting.
McKinney now faces charges of aggravated assault, a felony, as well as possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, another felony charge. Following his arrest, he was transported to Lowndes County Jail. Although the investigation is still ongoing, additional charges may be brought against McKinney as more evidence comes to light.
Meanwhile, the victim, Jerry Rowley, remains in critical condition. The severity of his injuries necessitated his transfer from South Georgia Medical Center to a hospital in Florida via a life flight.
Chief Leslie Manahan expressed pride in the dedicated efforts of the detectives involved in the case. She acknowledged their relentless pursuit of leads and commitment to holding the offender accountable for his senseless actions.
“I am proud of the work our detectives did by continuing to follow up with every piece of information they received. They worked non-stop to ensure that the offender was identified and can be held accountable for his needless actions,” Chief Manahan stated.
As the investigation progresses, the authorities aim to bring justice to the victim and provide a sense of security to the Valdosta community..
