A tragic incident has unfolded in Madera County, Central California, as the body of a missing teenager was discovered in an orchard. The victim, identified as 19-year-old Melanie Stephanie Rios Camacho, had been reported missing by her mother last week. The Madera County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that Camacho’s remains were positively identified on Monday, and two suspects have been arrested in connection with her slaying, including her ex-boyfriend.

The heartbreaking news came after Camacho’s mother reported her daughter missing on Friday when she failed to return home on Thursday night. The Madera County Sheriff’s Department expressed their condolences to the grieving family, especially as they approach what would have been Melanie’s 20th birthday this Friday.

According to the sheriff’s office, Camacho was last seen alive around 10:15 p.m. on Thursday, when she left her job at an Auto Zone in Madera. Her mother received a text message from her around 11 p.m., stating that she was planning to meet a friend after work. However, upon contacting the friend, detectives learned that the two never met that night. Instead, the friend revealed that Camacho intended to meet with her ex-boyfriend to exchange or receive something.

On Saturday morning, sheriff’s deputies responded to a car fire on the outskirts of Madera and discovered that the vehicle, a white 2014 Nissan Altima, belonged to Camacho. While investigating the fire, a witness informed the police about a blue Ford Mustang in the vicinity. The driver of the Mustang was seen picking someone up near the burning car before driving away. Surveillance footage confirmed the presence of a 2018 blue Ford Mustang at the scene.

Authorities managed to trace the registered owner of the Mustang, 22-year-old Jose Lopez Hernandez of Madera. After questioning Hernandez, detectives obtained a search warrant for his residence. During the search, detectives obtained crucial information that led them to an area of Avenue 20 west of Highway 99, where they discovered human remains believed to belong to Melanie Camacho.

The cause of Camacho’s death has not been disclosed by the sheriff’s office. However, during the investigation, detectives identified her ex-boyfriend, 24-year-old Vicente Alexandro Jasso, as the primary suspect in her murder. In a dramatic turn of events, Jasso was spotted by sheriff deputies driving a minivan registered in his name on Monday morning. When law enforcement attempted to pull him over, Jasso led them on a high-speed chase through three cities. Eventually, California Highway Patrol officers successfully immobilized Jasso’s vehicle using a spike strip.

Jasso abandoned the minivan and attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended with the assistance of a law enforcement helicopter crew. Joe Madril, a witness who observed the arrest, described the scene as the helicopter circled overhead and law enforcement ordered Jasso to surrender. Jasso was found hiding in Madril’s backyard among the shrubs.

During the pursuit, sheriff’s deputies witnessed Jasso discarding items from the vehicle, which were later identified as Camacho’s personal belongings, including her driver’s license.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, Jasso has been charged with murder, while Lopez Hernandez faces charges of accessory to murder. Both suspects are currently being held without bail at the Madera County Jail.
