HOUSTON – In a devastating turn of events, a fatal motorcycle accident occurred on Monday morning following a police chase in north Houston. The heart-wrenching news was delivered to Sorto’s father after the crash, leaving the family in an unimaginable state of grief and sorrow.

Police Chase Leads to Fatal Collision

According to the authorities, the tragic incident unfolded when police officers noticed two drivers engaged in a race on I-45 and Gulf Bank around 2:08 a.m. on Monday. In an attempt to stop one of the drivers, an officer pursued the suspect in the 17400 block of North Freeway. Unfortunately, the driver refused to comply and instead accelerated, reaching speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

It was later revealed that the 16-year-old driver was operating a stolen Kia Forte during the chase.

Tragically, after approximately six minutes of pursuit, the driver exited FM 1960, ran a red light, and collided with Sorto, who had the right of way. Sorto, who was riding his motorcycle at the time, had no chance to avoid the collision. The impact of the crash resulted in Sorto’s immediate death.

Shockingly, the 16-year-old driver did not stop at the scene to aid Sorto and continued to evade the police. However, his attempt to escape came to an end when the stolen vehicle became disabled half a mile away. Police apprehended the suspect, who exhibited signs of intoxication, shortly thereafter.

Charges and Arrest

The juvenile driver now faces serious charges, including murder, failure to stop and render aid involving death, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, and intoxication manslaughter.

The incident has sparked debates regarding police pursuit policies. The Houston Police Department recently released a revised vehicle pursuit policy to address concerns surrounding the safety of innocent bystanders during high-speed chases.

In addition to the tragic loss of life, investigators discovered that the Kia Forte used by the suspect had been stolen the day before the incident, adding another layer of criminality to the case.

As the community mourns the loss of Andres Saldana Sorto, questions arise about the need for stricter policies and regulations concerning police pursuits to prevent such heartbreaking accidents in the future.
