Authorities from the Aurora Police Department have apprehended a man believed to be responsible for a fatal double stabbing incident that occurred on East Colfax Avenue in October. Deven Jay Dobbins, a 30-year-old individual, was arrested on October 28 in Brookfield, Missouri on charges of second-degree murder in connection with the stabbings of Otto Washington, 58, and Desmond Thomas, 44.

The tragic incident unfolded on the evening of October 16 in the 11200 and 11300 blocks of East Colfax Avenue when concerned passersby informed patrol officers about a man lying in the street. Further reports from additional witnesses led officers to discover a second victim a short distance away. Both Washington and Thomas were immediately rushed to the hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to their injuries.

Following a thorough investigation, detectives identified Dobbins as the primary suspect and subsequently obtained a nationwide arrest warrant. The Aurora Police Department released a statement confirming these developments on Tuesday.

In an impressive display of coordination and cooperation, the fugitive unit of the Aurora Police Department reached out to local authorities in Brookfield, Missouri for assistance in locating and apprehending Dobbins. Brookfield, a small town with a population of approximately 4,000 people, is situated roughly 110 miles northeast of Kansas City.

With the support of Brookfield police, Linn County deputies, and Missouri state troopers, an extensive search was conducted, ultimately leading to the successful apprehension of Dobbins on October 28. Subsequently, he was extradited to Colorado on November 18 and subsequently booked into the Arapahoe County Jail on two counts of second-degree murder.

Aurora police have confirmed that there are no additional suspects connected to the case. The arrest of Dobbins marks a significant breakthrough in the investigation and provides a sense of closure to the victims’ families and the community at large.

Further scrutiny into Dobbins’ background has revealed that he had previously been arrested in October 2022 on suspicion of three counts of assault and child abuse. Eventually, he pleaded guilty to a charge of third-degree assault in Jefferson County District Court in August. Court records indicate that Dobbins served a 91-day jail sentence, with credit for time already served.

In addition to the aforementioned charges, Dobbins is also suspected of being involved in a second-degree assault incident on October 5, as per court records. A warrant for his arrest in connection with this incident was issued on October 19.
