According to the State Patrol, the deadly crash happened shortly before 5 p.m. when a northbound Toyota Prius attempted a left turn from Hwy. 169 onto south Washington Ave. The Prius, occupied by 86-year-old Judith Morey Gardner and Robert Merritt Gardner, was struck in the intersection by a southbound Hyundai car. The collision caused a chain reaction, as a southbound Toyota SUV had to abruptly brake to avoid the crash and was subsequently rear-ended by a Chevy SUV.

Tragically, Robert Merritt Gardner was pronounced dead at the scene, while Judith Morey Gardner sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
