ROSELAND, La. – A devastating accident took place on Saturday night (Nov. 25) in Tangipahoa Parish, claiming the life of a 44-year-old Kentwood resident. According to the Louisiana State Police, the victim, identified as Mervin Briggs, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree, resulting in his untimely death.

The incident occurred on Louisiana Hwy. 1058, near the intersection with Hwy. 1059, around 10 p.m. State Police are currently investigating the circumstances that led to Briggs’ loss of control.

Tragically, Briggs was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. The impact of the collision with the tree proved fatal, and Briggs was pronounced dead at the scene. As part of the ongoing investigation, a toxicology sample was collected for analysis.

Importance of Seat Belt Usage Emphasized by State Police

The Louisiana State Police would like to remind all motorists of the critical importance of seat belt usage. According to state law, every person inside a moving vehicle is required to wear a seat belt, regardless of their seating position.

In a statement, LSP spokesman Trooper William Huggins stressed the life-saving benefits of wearing seat belts. “Properly wearing your seat belt is one of the most effective ways to save your life and reduce injuries in crashes,” he said.
