Three college students described as being of Palestinian descent were shot and wounded in a shooting incident in Burlington, Vermont on Saturday. The victims have been identified as Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Ahmed, and Kinnan Abdalhamid.

The three victims, all undergraduate students at prestigious Brown, Haverford, and Trinity Colleges, were on their way to a family dinner when the incident occurred, according to Husam Zomlot, the head of the Palestinian mission to the UK. Zomlot made the identification through X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

“Three young Palestinian men, namely Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Ali, and Kenan Abdulhamid, who are students at Brown and other US universities, were shot last night while heading to a family dinner in Burlington, USA. Their only crime? Wearing the Palestinian keffiyeh. They are currently in critical condition. Moreover, just six weeks ago, a 6-year-old Palestinian child was brutally stabbed 26 times in a hate crime in Illinois. It is high time to put an end to these hate crimes against Palestinians, and Palestinians worldwide need protection,” Zomlot stated in a Twitter post, tagging US President Joe Biden (@POTUS) and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the motive behind the shooting or whether it is related to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in the Middle East.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, on X, expressed their concerns, stating, “We strongly believe that the shooting was motivated by the victims’ Arab ethnicity.”

“The three victims were wearing a kuffiyeh and conversing in Arabic when a man verbally harassed and shouted at them,” the committee further added.

According to a report by Seven Days Vermont, the incident took place near the University of Vermont campus at approximately 6:30 PM local time on Saturday. The victims were swiftly taken for medical treatment. However, the suspect responsible for the shooting has not yet been identified.
