The international community has been flooded with reports of the recent execution of a 17-year-old murder convict in Iran, igniting widespread public indignation. Human rights groups express their distress over the Islamic Republic’s continued implementation of capital punishment for crimes committed by minors, stirring up controversy and sparking heated online discussions.
The executed individual has been identified as Hamidreza Azari, whose execution took place on Friday in a prison located in the eastern town of Sabzebar, within the Razavi Khorasan province, according to statements from Norway-based Hengaw and Iran Human Rights (IHR) groups. Iran International, a Persian-language satellite TV channel, reported that Azari, an only child, had been working as a scrap worker for several years.
Documents provided by Hengaw and IHR reveal that Azari committed the crime leading to his execution at the age of 17, even though he was only 16 years old at the time. He was condemned to death for fatally injuring an individual during a brawl in May. This execution has been deemed a significant violation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child by rights groups, as it recognizes any person under the age of 18 as a child.
Iran’s Controversial Capital Punishment Laws
Iran has gained notoriety for being among the few countries that still enforce capital punishment for juvenile offenders. According to IHR, Iran holds the unfortunate record of executing more minors than any other country. Shockingly, their data indicates that approximately 68 minors have been executed in Iran since 2010. Mahmood-Amiry Moghaddam, the director of IHR, criticizes Iran’s contradictory laws, highlighting that while the country permits the execution of 15-year-olds, these individuals must reach the age of 18 to qualify for a driver’s license.

A Double Execution on the Same Day
Adding to the grim situation, on the same day as Azari’s execution, another man in his early 20s was also executed. The identity of this individual remains undisclosed, but reports indicate that he was the eighth person to be hanged in connection to a series of nationwide protests that occurred in September 2022. This development adds further concern and urgency to the unfolding story.
