Chattogram: In a devastating incident that occurred on Saturday morning, three workers lost their lives after being struck by a speeding lorry on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Mirsharai upazila, Chattogram district.

The tragic accident took place at approximately 8 am near the Wireless BSCIC area of the upazila. The victims have been identified as Alamgir Hossain, aged 45, son of Abul Kalam, and Shafiqul Islam, aged 42, son of Malek Bepari. Both of them hailed from Sujanagar upazila in Pabna district. The third victim, Masud Mia, aged 35, son of Humayun Kabir, was from Ashuganj upazila in Brahmanbaria district. All three were employees of the Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited.

According to witnesses and the police, the group of workers was on foot, making their way to their workspace beside the highway when a speeding lorry truck collided with them. Two workers were killed instantly, while two others sustained critical injuries. The injured were rushed to the Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex, where one of them succumbed to his injuries.

Sohel Sarkar, the in-charge of Jorarganj Highway Police Station, stated that upon receiving information about the accident, the police recovered the bodies and seized the truck from the scene. However, the driver managed to flee before the authorities arrived.

Legal actions will be taken in this regard, and the bodies of the deceased will be handed over to their respective families, informed Sarkar.

This tragic incident has left the local community in shock and mourning. The loss of these hardworking individuals has deeply affected their families, friends, and colleagues. The authorities are urged to take appropriate measures to prevent such accidents on highways and ensure the safety of pedestrians.

The in-charge of Jorarganj Highway Police Station, Sohel Sarkar, stated that upon receiving information about the accident, the police swiftly responded, recovering the bodies of the victims and seizing the lorry truck involved in the incident. However, the driver managed to flee the scene before the authorities arrived.

Sarkar confirmed that legal actions will be taken in connection with the tragic accident. The bodies of the deceased workers will be handed over to their respective families after due process.
