Police in Los Angeles are currently investigating a protest that took place outside the residence of the president of the pro-Israeli lobbying group, AIPAC, as a potential hate crime. The demonstration, which occurred on Thursday morning in Brentwood, prompted the response of LAPD officers, who are now looking into allegations of vandalism and assault with a deadly weapon. The Los Angeles Times has reported that the protest is being treated as a potential hate crime.

Although the LAPD has a policy of not disclosing the names of crime victims in their reports, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has publicly identified the victim as Michael Tuchin, an attorney from LA who serves as the president of AIPAC. In response to the incident, Mayor Bass expressed her concern, stating, “Hate and violence will not be tolerated in our City. LAPD will continue to work with city and business leaders to keep Angelenos safe.”

AIPAC has faced criticism in the past, particularly following the Hamas terror attack in Israel on October 7th. The organization has been accused of purchasing political influence through donations to American lawmakers. While AIPAC is an American organization, its stated mission is to strengthen bipartisan support for the U.S.-Israel relationship and promote policies that foster a strong and mutually beneficial alliance between the two nations.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has previously criticized AIPAC, referring to it as an “extremist organization that destabilizes US democracy.” She has also accused the group of endorsing individuals involved in the January 6th insurrection and targeting members of color disproportionately. Ocasio-Cortez’s criticism reflects a wider debate surrounding the U.S.’s support for Israel, with some arguing that Israel’s response to the Hamas attack has been disproportionate and has resulted in the deaths of thousands of Palestinians.

A video posted online by the People’s City Council Los Angeles depicts a group of protesters outside Mr. Tuchin’s home, holding a sign that reads “F*** ur holiday baby killer.” Additionally, red liquid appears to have been poured onto the driveway, with small white bundles scattered around the property. However, no arrests have been made in connection with the protest at this time.
