Family Members Accuse Hospital of Negligence in Electrocution Deaths of Sarvesh Kumar, Kunwar Pal, and Raman Kumar

In a tragic incident that occurred on Friday, three men, including a retired Air Force Sergeant, lost their lives due to electrocution while repairing a water motor inside a tank in the basement of a private hospital in outer Delhi. The victims’ family members have now come forward and accused the hospital authorities of failing to provide them with the necessary safety gear.

The retired Air Force personnel, identified as Sarvesh Kumar, 59, was an electrical engineer at the Commander Hospital at Vikas Nagar, near Ranhola in outer Delhi. Hailing from Sahibabad, Uttar Pradesh, Sarvesh is survived by his wife and two sons aged 26 and 28. According to his family, Sarvesh retired from the Air Force in 2008.

The other two victims have been identified as Kunwar Pal, 40, and his son Raman Kumar, 20. Kunwar Pal worked as a plumber, and his son assisted him in his work. They were residents of Mohan Garden. Pal, who was the sole breadwinner of his family, leaves behind his wife and another son.

Distraught and seeking justice, Pal’s family took the bodies to the hospital to meet the owner, who is revealed to be an ex-servicemen. However, they were met with police intervention and eventually dispersed.

Dhanpal Kumar, Pal’s brother, expressed his disappointment, stating, “We don’t expect residential clients to provide safety gear for my brother’s plumbing work. However, larger establishments such as hospitals should have ensured the provision of rubber boots and gloves to prevent electrocution.”

According to investigators, the incident occurred when the water motor inside the 14-feet tank malfunctioned, prompting the hospital to call Pal for repair work. Despite the water level being at four feet when Pal entered the tank around 2:30 pm, he failed to resurface. Concerned for his father’s safety, Raman Kumar dived in to check on him, but both of them failed to return. Sarvesh Kumar, witnessing the situation, jumped in as well. It is suspected that all three individuals lost their lives due to the flowing current in the water.

The bodies of the victims were recovered using white sheets available at the hospital, as reported by an anonymous police officer.

Vipin Kumar, Pal’s second son, revealed that his father had been associated with the hospital for the past four to five years, undertaking plumbing work whenever requested by the hospital manager. However, when they attempted to approach the tanker at the hospital, they were denied access. Vipin and his mother were also prevented from meeting the owner.

Vipin, who is currently pursuing his graduation from Delhi University’s School of Open Learning, aspires to join the Delhi Police and took the constable examination on November 14. He expressed his concerns about the family’s future, stating, “My father was the sole earning member. How will we manage now? Who will compensate for our loss?”

On Saturday, the post-mortem examinations of the victims were conducted at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. Despite attempts to reach out to the hospital authorities for a comment, they remained unavailable.

Atul Garg, the director of Delhi Fire Services, shared that the firemen discovered that the tank was utilized for supplying water to the fire hydrant system.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer) Jimmy Chiram confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at the Ranhola police station under IPC’s Section 304A (death by negligence) and other relevant sections.
