Retired Chef of Japanese Descent Found Dead in Home in Liloan, Cebu

An American national with Japanese heritage was tragically discovered dead inside their residence in Purok Red Rose, Verrie Hills Subdivision, Barangay Yati, Liloan town, located in northern Cebu. The lifeless body of 72-year-old retired chef, Doug Hiroshi Sugawara, was found at 6:05 a.m. on Saturday, November 25, 2023.

Authorities from the Liloan Police Station, led by Police Major Eric Gingoyon, are currently investigating the incident, considering theft or a personal grudge as potential motives for the crime. The victim’s wife, Roxan Mandokita Sugawara, 30, who hails from Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental, informed authorities that she was asleep in a separate room within their rented apartment. She was shocked to discover her husband lifeless on the floor upon waking up.

The grisly scene revealed that the victim had suffered severe head wounds, with his wrists and feet bound using masking tape. Adding to the tragedy, the perpetrator also made off with the victim’s wallet, containing various identification documents, P1,200 in cash, and other essential papers.

Police Major Gingoyon stated that it is possible the assailant killed the victim as a result of his resistance during the attack. Unfortunately, the absence of CCTV cameras within the victim’s residence hinders initial progress. However, law enforcement plans to review any available surveillance footage from neighboring properties to aid in their investigation.

Authorities must await the findings from the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) autopsy reports to determine the exact cause of the victim’s death. The victim’s body has been transferred to Eversley Hospital in Mandaue City for further examination. The police are treating this case with utmost priority and are determined to bring the perpetrator to justice.

This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of residential security measures and the need for community vigilance. The local authorities urge residents to report any suspicious activities and remain cautious to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in the neighborhood.
